I used an iphone app called road trip. There was a free version and a paid version. Basically when you fuel up it asks for some information:
- date
- odometer reading
- litres of fuel
- $/litre
- total $

It then tracks these values and provides you with some statistics, such as average L/100 km, average fuel price, cost per km driven, that sort of stuff. It can easily be changed to MPG if you'd prefer that as well.

I haven't used it in a while since my car tracks all of this information now, but it worked really well for what I needed it for. I believe it lets you set up separate vehicles as well.
