I didn't want to start a new thread so bumping this one for GM discussion.
Treliving was praised heavily this summer and rightfully so after pulling the stunning trade for Hamilton and signing the highly sought after Frolik. He followed that up with what looked to be a great contract for Dougie and then Gio. A solid draft had many in Flames land feeling great about our management team. This is after he also got a steal for now retired Glencross getting a second and third and salvaged a 2nd for near bust Sven Baertschi
Less than 10 games in the season things appear to be going right off the rails. Trelivng has waived Raymond (a player he signed to a 3 year deal making $3.15M for this season and next) and Ramo (making $3.8M). Once TJ Brodie comes back there is likely a $3.5M (Smid) or $2.9M (Engellend) in the press box as well.
The Flames have roughly $20M in cap space next year with Russell (top 4 D), Hudler (top line RW), Jones, Hiller, Ramo, Ortio(RFA), Monahan(RFA), Gaudreau(RFA), Colborne(RFA) coming up for new deals. Flames can keep their young stars but could be tight filling holes around them.
Can he move contracts like Wideman, Stajan, Raymond, Engellend, Smid, Bollig, or even Backlund to create more flexibility?
If the Flames continue to suck he will have a few nice rentals to sell which will bring in assets and a high top pick could have this team poised to bounce back next year.
With the coaching discussion spilling over to the GM I thought we could bring this thread back to life to talk about the GM
