I think you are reading too much into it.
AA for whatever reason seems to play things way too close to the vest when it comes to the media so my guess it is just him not wanting to confirm anything until 6 months after the contract is signed.
He is a Canadian kid and has been with the Blue Jays for quite some time so I can't see why he would want to leave. Plus there isn't really a better opportunity out there for him to get paid more or to have a better chance to compete.
As for Shapiro I think it is a no brainer to bring him back. Blue Jays fans are in love with him and he is a perfect scapegoat if things go wrong in the next couple of years. If you let him go and next year doesn't go well there is a huge target on your back and the blame will go right to Shapiro.
