I understand that its symbolic of their Covenant with God, but it was pointed out to me that sometimes 'God' had a habit of getting people to do things they otherwise wouldnt that suited the circumstances.

Circumcision for instance. Most guys arent going to take a knife to their manhood all that willingly, hell in this day and age of precision manscaping tools thats still a sketchy affair.

However when you're in the situation the Jews were in, meandering about the desert for 40 years with limited access to water and medical supplies you could risk infections and various other complications in maintaining a healthy population and population level.

So one day 'God' decided that maybe he 'needs for them to do this' for 'reasons' and voila! All the makings of TRADITION practically sung at the top of his lungs by Trevya himself.

However, in a modern society we have access to all of the conveniences to keep it clean despite all of the marginal and scientifically dubious 'health benefits.'

Remember people, we were made 'in God's image' we probably shouldnt have to cut pieces of ourselves off in order to fit.
