A deal could happen but it's clear that the hawks want to rid themselves of Bickell and they need D. If the Flames trade them Smid, I'd take Bickell but I'd want something else of value, someone who can help this team score and imipact the roster, for that to happen the Flames would have to add more too.
Smid for Bickell helps the hawks a lot more than it helps the Flames.

Couldn't the Hawks say the same thing?
Smid is likely to be in the PB when Brodie returns. Bickel offers the Flames the size they need.
I would doubt/hope that Bickel would not be the 13th forward. For me he would definitely play ahead of Bollig, Raymond, Ferland, Jooris if everyone is healthy.
