I figured the reason scifi.com was making the web episodes available to US residents only was to save bandwidth. The SciFi channel only services the United States, so why waste bandwidth on people that could never be their customers.
But by that logic, scifi wouldn't have cared if the video was on YouTube -- in fact it could have even helped reduce the load on their site. Perhaps they have a specific reason for wanting people to view it on their site. My guess would be a deal with their advertising sponsor, since people rehosting the video could edit out the advertisements.
