My guess is you've read them already, but if you haven't check out Alan Moore's graphic novels--Watchmen is the best one, but V for Vendetta is pretty good too. League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is his weakest work in my opinion, but still far better than that train wreck they called a movie. Interestingly, Watchmen and V for Vendetta are actually pretty topical given the political climate in the US today.

Watchmen is a classic - read it again keeping in mind that the heroes were supposed to be the Charlton characters - Rorsach = the Question, The Comedian = Peacemaker, Dr. Manhattan = Capt. Atom.
Also, for fun, some fan re-wrote the story as "What if Stan Lee wrote the Watchmen", it is hilarious.
