What's much more sad, the US, the "birthplace of democracy"  , shows a meager 41%, good for 12th LAST. Brutal.

To be fair, that number is for a midterm election, which are typically low. Their presidential election in 2012 was around 65%, which is about the same as Canada. It appears most EU countries are in the 60% - 75% range.
