Check you local library, most have graphic novel sections.

I just finished a run of John Constantine: Hellblazer trades, recommended.

Y the last man and Fables are great.

Other offbeats to try - Preacher and Transmetropolitian

Ed Brubaker's Catwoman has become a very cool noir-type of book

The graphic novel version of "A History of Violence" was better than the movie.

100 bullets is great, but you need to start at volume #1

If you are looking for superheroes try going back to the JLA written by Grant Morrison.

I got my first comic book at the 7-11 accross from McNicoll in 1979 - been collecting ever since. There was a time when there were no comic shops in the south end, I had to take the C-train downtown and hoof it across the centre street bridge to a shop a couple of blocks on the other side of the river.
