I think Eberle's injury really degrades their top 6. Other than that, it's just a below average lineup. Plenty of decent NHLers there, and their bottom 6 is better than in years past. The problem is that guys are playing above their level or out of a position that they are best suited to. The team construction is miserable, not necessarily the players themselves.

They still lack top end defensemen and guys in their top 6 who can outcompete the opposition's top 6. I think given time McDavid and Hopkins will be a very solid 1-2 punch down the middle, but they need better complementary pieces around them. Hall is decent offensively, but he's a liability defensively (as is the whole team). Getting someone like Frolik is something they should have been working hard at this last off-season.

Another oddity is these are all the healthy forwards they currently have on their roster. They're still carrying 2 extra defensemen (Davidson and Ference), but have no extra forwards even though they aren't at the roster limit. I guess they don't feel they have anyone else on the farm who could help this team at the moment. That's where the real problem is for them, absolutely zero depth in the organization.
