The runner was already in motion toward the plate, and there wasn't a defensive play to be made, so the ump waving the play dead wasn't the issue so much as whether the play was legal. It was legal, and since it was in motion before the ump did anything, and the play could only end one way, the call was the right one. Weird and unfortunate, but the right one. The ump actually stayed out of the outcome of the game from the first pitch to the last, and did a great job. If only all games were called leaving the outcome to the players.
