I'm not sure it was meaningless. I think it had more actual honest to goodness important to voters content than the GOP debates. I also think the democratic party as a whole won as by and large you had all aspects of the party on that stage from left leaning to right leaning to progressives to moderates and they are all remarkably on the same page at the high level. The differ in details.

I think that unity will serve them well as you move through the process as they aren't intent on slinging mud at each other but rather having a debate about some differences and RESPECTING those differences in their policies and beliefs.

It's a win for the party because they didn't have whole sections of the debate dedicated to trying to allow candidates to dig out from under misogynistic, racist or other brutal and simply mind numbingly stupid remarks. The next GOP debate you are still going to have that if Carson remains at or near the top.

Above all, despite Bernie looking all Bernie and Hillary looking like Hillary what you saw was a debate between 2 or 3 people who are qualified and PROFESSIONAL in their behavior towards people. Yes there is some false facade etc but it isn't nearly the same as what the GOP trots out.
