Blu-Ray is better. Higher bitrate, greater storage (50 Gigs vs 30 Gigs)...
HDDVD is cheaper. They can use the same factories that created DVDs and convert the machines to create HDDVDs, while Blu-Ray is something completely different which need new machines.
VHS won out over Beta even though Beta was better simply because it was cheaper.

Isn't Toshiba's storage actually 60 gigs when you take into account both sides of the disk?
