Heck even 10 minutes after the conversation I can tell you I feel a hell of a lot better than I did the entire day yesterday and before the call today... either way I hope I this doesn't happen again.

I think its interesting they chose the phone rather than in person.
Not many people like up front confrontations and the phone helps avoid some bitter, in your face memories. It looks like they were on to you already.
You're the guy in charge of whether or not you can rebuild trust with them though.
