I guess the way I read it was that he was close enough to give the gory details; so does him not patting himself on the back mean that he didn't do anything?

I sorta read the tone of it as "EMS arrives on scene; I left it in their capable hands at that point."

Mind you I could be wrong too.

Some see the glass half empty, some see it half full; while others ask "Hey- who's been drinking my beer!"
