You were on board before me, and before most REM fans I would imagine. I was firmly on board the very first time I heard "The One I Love" which was the first REM song I heard that I knew was REM. I worked back from there. I love everything they did until Monster.

well if I'm being honest I didn't quite pick up the ball then
I was only 13. I happened to be up late watching TV (why I'm not sure), and thought 'wow, cool song'
but of course I didn't know how to find stuff that wasn't on mainstream radio...so I went back to listening to the Police, Men at Work and Split Enz
I got on board full time, like you, circa document
I think they've got great albums throughout their career with Murmur, Life's Rich Pageant, Document, Green, Automatic and Reveal probably my favorites...although I like them all
