Hartley's comment was pretty straight-forward IMO: the two vets are still 1-2 because they are the established vets and they have earned that. The new guy sits at 3 until he unequivocally surpasses them. That is the right approach, IMO.

However, I wouldn't read too much into that, in the 'he hasn't earned a job' sense.

The bottom line here is that they didn't put Ortio on waivers. They are keeping him here and are willing to put up with a 3 goalie situation for now to give him the opportunity to move up from 3.

To me, that speaks volumes about what they think his value is and where they see this situation going as they move forward.

I think they will rotate the 3 for now and let it play out. If Ortio plays well and proves that he deserves to be here full time, they will move one of the other 2. If Ortio stumbles, they re-assess.
