I did what you suggested with both MSVCR71.dll and D3DX9_27.DLL.
Now I'm getting the following message when I try to run the game:
ffe.exe - Entry Point Not Found
The procedure entry point D3DXMatrixLookAtLH could not be located in the dynamic link library D3DX9_27.DLL
WTF?!?
