Actually, police think
people lie. They are not trusting people. They spend much of their time dealing with people who are trying to deceive them - both accused and accusers.
While the case in the article was a miscarriage of justice, the slant of the article isn't helpful. If the point is that the justice system today treats women who make rape accusations unfairly, then we need to compare how police and the courts handle those accusations with how police and the courts accusations of other crimes, such as common assault, extortion, and theft.
