In your scenario, wouldn't they try and get his value higher by playing him in a contract year, and try to move him at the deadline? I don't think it makes sense to bench or waive him in any case.
Generally speaking I think people are underestimating Jones, I think he's going to have a good year and be a meaningful contributor. He had a great playoff series vs Vancouver and by all accounts has had a good camp.
