I would expect most split squads to look pretty thin on defence. I mean, even with our incredible depth, we're still starting 6/7 defencemen or very young prospects who have never played in the NHL on our 2nd pairing.
I think the Oilers problem is the exact opposite of what you're saying. IMO, they have so many 4/5/6/7 defensemen, they can actually roll out some solid 2nd or 3rd pairing defensemen in split squad games. What's laughable to me is that you can't even tell what squad is better since they don't have any 1/2 defensemen that stand out.
