Haven't the Flames AHL affiliate carried 8+ defensemen much of the last few years due to the number of back to backs and injuries/call-ups?
Coming out of summer it was mostly expected the Flames defensemen would be Giordano, Brodie, Hamilton, Wideman, Russell, Engelland and
Smid. Well Smid is out for a while still so that opens up an NHL job for someone to move up from the AHL.
Leaving Wotherspoon, Nakladal, Morrison,
Culkin, Kulak, Sieloff, Stevenson, Kanzig,
Kylington and players on PTOs (Johnson, Murray, Wilson) fighting for AHL jobs. Culkin is out for a while, which opens up a 2nd AHL job to start the season. Johnson obviously fills one of those. With Pilon quitting hockey it means Kylington is pretty much guaranteed to get price playing time in Brandon so IMO sending him there is a now brainer.
That leaves what 10 guys (including PTOs) for 1 NHL job and probably 8 AHL jobs. Unless both Wilson and Murray are signed everyone signed to an NHL or AHL contract will have a place.
