You probably haven't lost someone very close to you based on that comment.
I lost someone extremely close, might as well have been my own child, a few years back, and was emotional at the time, but managed to hold it together. About a year and a half later, it actually hit me, almost like I woke from a dream. Let's just say I almost didn't make it through it.
These types of wounds can cut very deep, and sometimes take months or years, for them to start to bleed. And they can bleed profusely many years later.
