Yeah...NYC is a relatively old place, and until recently some areas were too violent and dirty to visit. So there's all sorts of old buildings out there.

NYC also, generally, has a bed bug problem. So all the hotels have them at some point.

So yeah...reviews are very important. There are also websites that track bed bug outbreaks. Avoid hotels with recent outbreaks.

That being said, there a lot of cool little boutique hotels. I stayed at the Marcel near Gramercy Park. Great location and facility for relatively cheap.
