Not that I am agreeing with Eldrick's opinion on his authority, Pittis definitely writes click-bait articles, and this is certainly one of them.
He talks about how the deficits occured during a "commodities and energy boom-cycle" and disregards the fact that our major trading partner - the US - as well as the rest of the world was/is going through one of the slowest recoveries after the last recession. If you look at the deficits graph, it is exactly what one would expect from a slow recovery, drawn out, tepid return to growth that the US (and thus Canada) has experienced.
Anyone who has followed the macro economic picture over the last five years can recognize that the deficits Canada has logged did not occur in isolation.
