Don't feed the !@#% wild rabbits!!
As with most parts of Calgary, we have jackrabbits (actually a type of hare) in our community (Royal Oak). Unfortunately for them, one of the homeowners decided that leaving out a ton of carrots on their front lawn every night for them to eat would be a good idea. They ended up moving yesterday; and as I drive home tonight, I see four jackrabbits waiting around her lawn waiting for carrots. There's a little one that was born this year that's been fed virtually exclusively on carrots; it just stood there for about 10 minutes until I tried to drive over it. That one's not going to survive fall, much less winter.
Also, it turns out the hawks have been picking off the jackrabbits while they feed out in the open lawn with their heads down, as the hawks have been leaving all sorts of wonderful rabbit parts in my backyard like limbs, heads and guts.
I phoned the city about this, apparently it's not illegal to feed wildlife in Calgary. I did mention that their front yard and the sidewalk was covered in rabbit poo; a bylaw officer were supposed to do something about that, but it looks like the couple didn't care.
Anyhow, don't feed the damned things. They've infested my community (I've counted over twenty of them in one spot), and now that they're not getting their carrot fill, they're goning to start gnawing on everything else. Fantastic. Stop messing around with wildlife.
