While I'm not sure that "prides" is the best term to use it's hard to argue that the Vatican's position towards women and homosexuals has historically been anything but hostile/repressive. Pope Francis seems like a cool cat (as far as Popes go) but Benedict was of the more typical breed (and as the first Pope to have his tenure take place in the era of social media he was destined to take the brunt of the blowback to those positions).
That said there are certain ways to approach things and obscenities on social media are... ill advised... regardless of whether you have a public position of employment or not.
