I know that this makes for a good internet joke, but the way I see it there's a better than average chance that this guy was mentally ill. Possibly bipolar--thinking you can walk on water sounds like classic mania to me. Which in a way is not funny at all.

Thinking that you have had a revelation is another classic sign. What's sad about this is that no-one in his congregation had the wherewithal to figure out that something was wrong and get help for the guy.
