Think about your own careers. Would you move into an unknown situation in a new city for maybe 20% more pay, or stay with your own company for a 10% raise knowing you like the job, there's good people around you and you can move up the corporate ladder (i.e.: the hockey equivalent of winning the Cup)?

I agree with that analogy. To me it is more of a "premium" to move to another team rather than a discount, though. For me to move jobs, I would think I would need a 20% bump.
Perhaps a comment better suited to the Glencross discussion, but I think all of those things you listed have value. It isn't a hometown discount as much as the hometown provides something that the other markets can't (right away).
