the only reason I can concievely think why United would do this on purpose is that it is expected Madrid get the same transfer ban that Barca have right now (basically a registration ban), depending on when Madrid get it, they will most likely appeal it so they have another transfer window to buy for essentially two years
when Barca did it they delayed it last summer and got Suarez, Bravo, Ter Stegen, Rakitic, Mathieu, Rafinha
Madrid are light at striker and at the back, so they would most likely do the same thing. So if it gets levied against them before January they would have to delay it for then, and have the ban be for next summer and winter 2017. \
Which would mean that DDG can go there on a free but cant play for a season basically, don't know if he is willing to do that. So its a tin foil hat conspiracy but maybe United expect something like that to happen and hope it persuades him to stay

that makes no sense though. Why negotiate a deal with Real and have van Gaal convince Navas via phone if they intend to botch the deal? If they didn't want De Gea to join Real now they could have just, you know, rejected their offer. I don't know if Real botched the deal on purpose or not, but I'm pretty sure United didn't.
Speculation now grows that De Gea will re-sign with United so that he's not in the stands this season. With Euros coming up, it's important that he plays, so I wouldn't be shocked if they were able to convince him to pen a new deal. Would be massive for United. Just include a realistic buyout clause so that he can still go to Real next summer and be done with it.
