Lots of trainers don't know what the hell they're doing. Especially ones with major league teams because they get to work with the best of the best athletically. As long as they don't injure the athletes they can do no wrong.

This is a stupid statement. That's like saying that if he didn't grow up playing with the absolute top of the line skates/gloves/sticks growing up then there is no way he could become an elite athlete.
It is BECAUSE he is in such good shape that he can make up for not wearing weightlifting specific shoes for this exercise without it negatively effecting him or putting him at risk of injury. Your last paragraph perfectly argues your first
