It could be argued Buffalo is still rebuilding and Florida is operating under an internal cap. But I'll give you those two, and maybe Colorado and the Islanders. So I'd say there were maybe three or four teams who would have been in on Gio as a UFA. And those are all franchises that are pretty tight with their money these days. Maybe someone like the Islanders would have gone all in. But I don't they would have offered 7 years at $8 mil or anything crazy like that.

I'm glad Gio is staying. But I don't think he had anywhere near the options some fans think. Teams these days don't go throwing around six year deals at $7 mil+ to 32-year-old UFAs.

A lot of this just isn't true. You know that teams will have expiring deals after this season right? Toronto will have Horton on the IR, which gives them close to 8 million this season. Not to mention arcobello, spaling, parenteau, and polak all coming off the books.

Colorado has an internal cap? This is news to me.
Edmonton sees nikitin, Purcell, and Schultz all expire next season. That's like 13 million right there.

The point being that many teams would find a way to make it work and there would have been multiple teams bidding for his service. The flames are in no way paying a premium on this deal.
