I'm surprised they didn't front load it. It's kind of a win-win. Give Gio more money now as a reward for his current elite level, better net present value of money, with an added bonus of the Canadian dollar being awful so getting a huge bonus. Of course this is expensive from the Flames management point of view. But, then in 4-5 years, who knows where CAD will be, and if his play has dropped way off, we could have unloaded him to a Phoenix/Florida type team who could use the low salary/high cap to reach the floor. More flexibility for the team.
That said, absolutely thrilled with the contract. In Treliving We Trust!
