He didn't start his career late.. what does that even mean?
He played junior, played in the AHL, played his first NHL games at 21 then played half a season at 22. He wasn't drafted and his development curve was wildly different then most NHL players and can be considered a late bloomer but he didn't start his career any later.
The fact that he established himself as an NHL player a little later (24?) doesn't mean he didn't wasn't playing hockey anywhere prior to that.
Throw out whatever false hope you have about this weird idea.
