Well because of the gen 5/6 socket stuff (x99/z170), the best chip you could use on a z87 board is the i7-4790k. I wouldn't really bother with Tick-Broadwells.
If you can offload the z87 board and RAM, i would recommend getting a z170 set/DDR4 once the CPUs finally get released in NA sometime next month/early Oct.
Always sucks when you are ready to upgrade on the cusp of a new processor gen.
