Canada is a G6 nation, remember that. Almost all Canadian cities have modern NHL rinks and CFL stadiums except Calgary. If and when Canada hosts a WC (or other major sporting event), you would be glad to have Calgary miss out because you think "billionaire should pay for his own arena/stadium", while other Canadian cities enjoy international and prestigious events? Calgary is consistently skipped over for concerts as well, it's not just sports.

John Oliver is right about many things, but not all things.

This isn't about John Oliver, but he was sure right in quoting all the economists who have commented on this issue before.

I am not talking about the infrastructure not being used, I'm talking about the amount of money that is lost to build the infrastructure for these events for minimal gain outside some international prestige. There is a reason the Olympics are going to Russia and China; the World Cup going to Russia and Qatar. They are not a good investment for any country/city and anyone who thinks they otherwise are not looking at the actual numbers. But you seem to be totally pre-occupied with the "presitge" of the city; which you can get without the olympics/world cup/ sports franchises.

It is the G8 not the G6.

What concerts have we truly missed out on that take away from our enjoyment of life? is this really just a "well Edmonton gets them" argument?
