You are 100% correct. But if you don't think this drums up publicity, you would be 100% wrong.
Howard Stern became one of the highest paid people in entertainment for a reason. As soon as some wacky person called in to his show, he let them run with it, not hang up. He has spoken openly about what has made him successful, and if you think about it, reality TV is just an extension of that.
Rutherford's local radio show did just that as well, he welcomed angry callers and engaged them. That was a high point in his show.
CBC right now, is doing whatever they can to squeeze this event for what it is worth. So although there are not people watching for the interruptions, the events certainly increase viewers.
