No, don't get a skateboard. Man, I hate this attitude from skaters. I've been skateboarding since 1986 (started on a banana board with rollerskate wheels bolted to it) and I love how the sport has branched out in recent years. I have three skateboards now and they all do different things. Back in the day there was only really one type, but things are better today. Right now, I'm having the most fun on my longboard, but I still ride my skate and work on new tricks, too.
Longboards are better for transportation than skateboards. It's just a fact. They are more stable, which is much better for a full-grown lady that wants to ride downtown while dressed in her work clothes versus a skateboard. She's not going to be sliding rails on her way out of the office or hitting Millennium Park on her way home. She wants to get from A to B, probably while minimizing her chance of falling.
Skateboards are way sketchier than longboards and it's terrible advice to tell her to buy one for what she wants to do. It's a great way to get her disinterested in the sport.
