One step at a time man. Planning cities is TOUGH. And the best ones go through multiple plans and multiple ages. It's not SimCity.
Similarly, it's kinda tough to predict what will be looked back on as "cool history" and what will be looked back on as a joke.

Do you think anyone will be complaining that there isn't any awesome architecture from the 60's, with it's modernist blocks and efficient floor plans? But man they sure as hell might miss cool 50's diners or signs.

It's tough to plan what to preserve and what to replace.
