Interestingly, I would argue that you're quite incorrect about that. China's wounds, inflicted by the Western imperialist powers (and of course Japan) in the 19th and 20th centuries, are still very fresh in the minds of many Chinese. It is referred to there as the Hundred Years of National Humiliation.
