I disagree that you could "immediately tell" there was a significant change. By the end of the season? Sure. But until mid to late January, they were terrible.

Take a look at this PGT for the loss vs. the Jets on January 17, 2014 - lots of shame, the expectation of a long period of struggle, even a "blow it up" and "train wreck" comment or two. Not the "they lost, but loved the effort this team brings every night" thread you would expect based on your memory.

Edit: And, yeah, I picked the last game before the Canucks brawl intentionally. Because that game is the true fulcrum for the Flames fortunes. That game galvanized the team and kicked off the great run at the end of that season, which carried over to last. And that's all on Hartley. Not Giordano, who, like I said, I love, but Hartley.
