I've been batting around this question in my mind since I saw the thread on the way to work this morning. I think a solid case could be made for the Lanny, Iggy, and Gio. I settled for Lanny because as mentioned he set the standard in the community. I think if you hear any of the players talk about the 80's there is a central figure that comes up.
Gio and Iggy are a coin flip for me right now. As much as Giordano has done in his short tenure as captain, Iginla has also had short period where he took this team on his shoulders and accomplished some remarkable things. Yes his later years as the captain seem to cast a shadow over his captaincy, but he did a lot of good things early on. Ask this question again in a year or two and I think Giordano closes and surpasses Iginla.
After those three there is a pretty steep ledge.
