My big hatred of the EU was the constant over powering of the use of the force and how powerful they made the Solo brats and the Skywalker kids.
Suddenly the force went from something that could throw some objects around and opening doors and being faster and able to see into the future to something that could push entire Star Destroyer fleets out of systems, to crashing star destroyers, to making stars explode.
The force became the ultimate solution to ultimate victory for the hero's.
That's why my hope was that the use of the force and the battle between the Jedi and Sith wouldn't be the core battle in this movie.
I do kind of like the idea that I've heard that Luke didn't reconstitute the Jedi Order and have hundreds of Jedi running around the gffa.
I tend to think that the idea of bringing balance to the force was not only the destruction of the Jedi order, but also the end of the Sith line.
To me, Palpatine was probably the most powerful force user in all of the movie canon, and Yoda was pretty equal to him, but what made Palpatine special was that he was just a cunning and devious politician, he was basically the devil. Yoda was powerful as well but he was the trusting naif who didn't see that the guy swinging the axe in the end was a guy that acted as if he was a faithful friend of the Jedi.
In other words Yoda was almost like the Christ figure and Palpatine was the devil with the angelic mask.
It was a great battle.
What my hope is for this new movie is that the Sith line and the Sith power is dead, the thousands of years of gathering knowledge and power under the rule of two are completely gone, if someone wants to take up the true mantle of Sith Lordship, the journey is gathering the power and knowledge, something that wouldn't happen quickly. So frankly any dark side user in this new movie would be in terms of comparison to Vader and Palpatine be relatively weak but growing, maybe untrained force users using the new order to gather and steal artificacts and information.
Luke on the other hand seeing how the battle between light and dark side is utterly destructive and never ending and he's refused to train jedi and withdrawn from the galaxy and in his exile has gathered and is guarding all knowlege for the light and dark side.
So it becomes a different kind of battle where the dark side users are seeking this knowledge and information in following the axiom that the Sith gain understanding through power, where the Jedi gain power through understanding.
The battle between the rebels since they haven't won the galaxy yet, and the New Order is almost a side show and distraction.
Which means at some point this movie becomes a battle between Luke and these dark side users (Kylo Ren and the other dark lord that they've hinted with) Luke ultimately is forced to train jedi for the battle, and at some point you can have that hand off where Luke becomes the Ben Kenobi and the fate of the Jedi and the light side are handed off to the next generation.
