And again, the only reason the lion story came to light was because of it's status. Animals get slaughtered in all kinds of disgusting manners and we don't read about it in social media like we have about Cecil.

This is kind of the point. Maybe if we start making a big deal about these things more often, eventually the behaviour will be weeded out.
People are focusing entirely too much on why people are paying more attention to Cecil than other animal atrocities. It doesn't matter. What matters is that the awareness that comes from these types of stories can hopefully bring people who otherwise wouldn't know or care into the issue and further grow awareness of these and similar issues.
