Is a younger player preferable to a veteran? Sometimes, but usually for cost-control, level of play and upside reasons (which aren't there for Franson, as a 27 year old UFA who will be 28 this season, and hasn't ever produced as much as Wideman had at this point in his career).

It wasn't long ago that about 80 percent of people on here wanted to run Wideman out of town. Not suggesting that you were one but Franson in to replace Wideman and assets back for Wideman makes sense to me
If we could sign Franson 5 million for 4 years is better than keeping Wideman IMO. Wideman coming off a 50+ point season could bring us quality assets back and by trading him now rather than next summer or attempting to resign him is a much better option. Based on production Wideman probably ask for at least 6 maybe 6.5 or 7. Trading him next summer probably decreases the return you get as most of his production came post Giordano injury and with Hamilton added there is no guarantee for 1st pp time this year. If the Flames can add Franson for less money than Wideman makes now longer term than what Wideman has right now its a no brainer to do. Even if we add just draft picks we could be looking at extra picks in 2nd 3rd and 4th in next draft as well as a much better cap situation for the next 4 years than we have with Wideman right now
