Not anymore, really... the elite guys are going to be in the $10M range, so a passable, second-rate first line center / elite 2nd line center (which is what a guy who puts up 50-60 points a season is) is going to command these bucks. Compare this to the Kesler deal, it's much, much better (granted, Kesler was in a different situation).
Also, Stepan's trending the right direction... only 25, had 44 points his first year, 57 points his second year, and last year 55 points in 68 games (a 66 point pace). Even missing those 14 games he was top 30 in scoring among centermen.
This seems like a pretty reasonable deal to me.
