He seems motivated to stay in the NHL and is trying to prove himself. At 1 mil for a year, I don't know how you can say this is a bad signing. If things don't work out then who cares, but if they do and he regains his form look out.

He may be motivated to 'prove' himself again this year. But the reason he has to is that he has shown over and over again that he is beyond lazy.
In the NHL, you have to show up
every night. He has repeatedly demonstrated that he can't.
He might manage to be motivated enough to put up a decent season this year, but it's nothing more than a ruse.
And it takes a roster spot away from someone that actually
is committed.
That's not how you build a winning culture.
