They've been hard to follow over the last 100 years or so, as they've gotten extremely good at hiding their tracks and fracturing their power bases, owning all the major media outlets helps a lot too. It's hard to say exactly who or what they have been doing over this time, and it's easy to fall into insane conspiracy theories when trying to figure out what they've been up to lately.
The best start would be to educate yourself about the Rothschild family during the 1800s, they were unquestionably the wealthiest family in the world during this time (wealthier than the European Monarchs) and made no effort to hide their power and influence. They were the first to learn that the best way to make money was finance both sides of a war, this allowed them to influence who won the war and governments could be relied upon to tax their people in order to pay their war debts.
They laid the foundations for the financial institutions that still dominate the world and essentially cast the mold for the modern day money masters.
