Under the cap you can pay each player an average of 3 million. For every player getting paid 5 million you need a player to get 1 million to level that out. For every player getting 8 million you need two players getting paid 1 million.
If Bouma keeps producing as a third liner his contract is fine.
I think the reason many are concerned is that Bouma hasn't produced at any level, including the CHL. He is a prime candidate to regress.
If he is playing like a fourth liner your burning cap that would allow you to sign one of your high end players like Gaudreau, Monahan, Giordano, etc.
Time will tell if this is a good contract. Personally I love Bouma. But by the numbers he isn't the defensive player some are giving him credit for being and there is a real chance he can't sustain this seasons offensive production.
I think he just cashed in on a fluke season and I think the cap is too high. I hope I am wrong.
