In my experience the $400 shoe ends up being cheaper in the long run. It's only $50 to resole a shoe which is cheaper than another disposal pair.
The ethical argument is a neat one too. There was a day that the average person owned a few outfits and they were made by the tailor down the street. Now we have huge closets full of junk from overseas. The tailor and cobbler, middle class skilled jobs, have almost been completely eliminated. They've been replaced with minimum wage door greeters.
And on that note, take a trip to Sears next time you want some underwear. Prodige and Protocol are not only affordable but made in Canada.
